Corning International Corporation and Optiemus Infracom Limited have commenced construction on India's inaugural cover-glass finishing facility, Bharat Innovative Glass Technologies (BIG Tech), in Tamil Nadu. Located within the SIPCOT Pillaipakkam industrial park in Kanchipuram District, this facility aims to produce premium, finalized cover-glass components for mobile consumer electronics.
The establishment of BIG Tech is anticipated to bolster local supply chains and generate significant employment opportunities, contributing to Tamil Nadu's stature as a center for innovation and technological advancement. MK Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, highlighted the groundbreaking as a pivotal investment in the state's industrial capabilities.
Earlier this year, BIG Tech formalized an MoU with the Tamil Nadu Government, outlining plans for a Rs 1,003 crore investment in setting up the cover glass manufacturing plant. This initiative aligns with BIG Tech's commitment to meeting the escalating demand for high-quality cover glass solutions in the mobile phone sector.
David Velasquez, VP and General Manager of Corning Gorilla Glass, underscored the strategic importance of supporting regional supply chains to enhance consumer access to the renowned durability of Gorilla Glass.
The launch of this facility signifies Corning's ongoing commitment to investing in India across various sectors, particularly those reflecting emerging market dynamics in the region. Ashok Gupta, Executive Chairman of Optiemus Infracom, emphasized that establishing India's premier cover-glass finishing operation marks a significant milestone in meeting the evolving needs for advanced, top-tier cover glass products.
The BIG Tech facility is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing India's capabilities in mobile electronics manufacturing, further solidifying Corning and Optiemus Infracom's foothold in the burgeoning Indian market.
